The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy At All anime unveiled visual art for characters Mitsuki and Aya prior to its January 2027 premiere. The news was shared during Aniplex’s livestream today. The project was first disclosed in February, with the production studio and opening theme revealed at Anime Expo the following July.
The series will feature Nirvana’s “Breed” as its opening theme, a fact confirmed by Dave Grohl. Masashi Ishihama is helming the work at studio CloverWorks. The principal voice actors are Mariya Ise as Mitsuki Koga and Akari Kito as Aya Osawa. The fresh artwork can be viewed below.
The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All, commonly known by its abbreviations KiniOto or TGSWIIWAGAA and hailed by readers as the “Green Yuri” for its distinctive green artwork, is a manga penned by Sumiko Arai. Its origins trace back to a short story that Arai posted on Twitter from July through September 2021.
It later returned as a weekly web comic in April 2022, migrated to Pixiv Comic in April 2023, and simultaneously launched in print with Media Factory that same month. By February 2026, four tankōbon volumes had been issued. In 2023, it earned the Next Manga Award in the web manga category.
Crunchyroll describes the story:
A fashionable and cheerful high‑schooler named Aya is passionate about rock music, feeling alone in her taste until she encounters a mysterious, stylish employee at a CD shop. Cloaked in black and exuding an air of intrigue, his impeccable musical choices capture her heart. Unbeknownst to her, the object of her affection is actually her classmate Mitsuki, a reserved girl who avoids attention. Sitting next to Aya, Mitsuki becomes aware of the other’s feelings but hesitates to disclose the truth. As their conversations grow more frequent, the question lingers: why does she keep opening up to Aya?
