The forthcoming A Certain ITEM of Dark Side anime has unveiled a fresh key visual showcasing its protagonists before the broadcast slated for October 9, 2026. The series had previously introduced its cast via a trailer.
The primary production team includes multiple veterans of the A Certain franchise, with Tatsuyuki Nagai once more serving as director, Shigeki Kimoto handling character design, Maiko Iuchi on music composition, and studio J.C. STAFF again overseeing the animation work.
The opening theme, “Ghost Sequence,” performed by East Of Eden, marks the group’s debut collaboration with an anime series. The closing track, “Meltdowner,” is delivered by Kishida Kyoudan & The Akeboshi Rockets, the creators of the original ending theme for A Certain Scientific Railgun T. Both compositions are available in the earlier released trailer.
Toaru Anbu no Shojo Kyosei (A Certain Dark Side’s Shared Life (ITEM)) is a side story set in the shadowy realm of Academy City, highlighting the notorious clandestine group ITEM. ITEM represents one of the city’s covert factions, made up of elite espers tasked with executing secret and frequently lethal assignments for the ruling authorities. Despite functioning as a unit, the team’s interpersonal dynamics are intricate. The roster includes:
- Shizuri Mugino (CV: Ami Koshimizu) – A Level 5 esper and the team’s leader, recognized for her formidable Meltdowner power and fiery temperament.
- Riko Takitsubo (CV: Aya Suzaki) – A Level 4 esper equipped with AIM Stalker, which enables her to locate other espers while inflicting severe damage to her own well‑being.
- Frenda Seivelun (CV: Maya Uchida) – A battle expert who prefers using traps and explosives over psychic abilities.
- Saiai Kinuhata (CV: Chinatsu Akasaki) – A Level 4 esper who controls nitrogen through Offense Armor, granting her near‑complete resistance to damage.
A Certain franchise began with Kazuma Kamachi’s light novel A Certain Magical Index (Toaru Majutsu no Index), first released in 2004 by Dengeki Bunko. Set in Academy City—a technologically advanced metropolis where science has birthed esper powers—the narrative centers on Toma Kamijo, a student burdened by misfortune yet endowed with the enigmatic “Imagine Breaker” ability, as he becomes embroiled in countless upheavals.
Due to its success, the franchise expanded into several anime adaptations and spin‑offs, among them:
- A Certain Magical Index (2008–2019) – The principal series, chronicling Toma’s confrontations with magical groups and the secret machinations of Academy City.
- A Certain Scientific Railgun (2009–present) – A spin‑off centered on Mikoto Misaka, a Level 5 esper, and her efforts to safeguard Academy City. Season 4 is presently under development.
- A Certain Scientific Accelerator (2019) – A further spin‑off that follows Accelerator, Academy City’s most potent esper, as he wrestles with his former transgressions and his emerging urge to shield others.
