A new POKÉTOON short anime titled Wartortle and the Continuation of Summer premiered on the official Pokémon YouTube channel on August 12. Shingo Yamashita directed the short, with animation production by Studio Chromato and Studio Colorido.
Shingo Yamashita is known for his opening direction on JUJUTSU KAISEN Season 1, Chainsaw Man Season 1, and URUSEI YATSURA. He also helmed Pokémon: Twilight Wings in 2020 and directed the 2021 POKÉTOON episode “Yume no Tsubomi.” Both projects were animated by Studio Colorido.
Yamashita recently debuted as a film director with Cosmic Princess Kaguya.
The tale centers on Rikuto, a youngster who visits his grandmother on an island as summer draws to a close. There he meets a peculiar Wartortle with a tail that differs from the Pokédex entry and a shell encrusted with moss.
Rikuto spends his time swimming and playing with Wartortle and the island’s native Pokémon, later learning that the ancient creature is linked to his family. Wartortle had been a childhood friend of Rikuto’s father three decades prior.

Wartortle and the Continuation of Summer is currently available on the official Pokémon YouTube channel as part of the POKÉTOON animated short series.
Pokémon announced its Generation 10 titles and starter Pokémon at this year’s Pokémon Day, which was showcased in the Pokémon Presents livestream on February 27, 2026. The games, named Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, are slated for a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive release in 2027.
Earlier, the series unveiled several special anime shorts, such as an episode for World Earth Day and a Dragonite‑centered short produced by CoMix Wave Films during Pokémon Day in 2025.
