Youko Umezu, Illustrator of the Vermeil in Gold Manga, Has Died

Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine (Square Enix) declared that Youko Umezu, the illustrator of the Vermeil in Gold series, has passed away. According to a statement released on their X page, she died of an ischemic stroke on July 7th.

Square Enix further disclosed that the Vermeil in Gold manga concluded its run with the latest installment appearing in the June 12^th edition. The editor overseeing the title will later share information about the yet‑uncollected chapter. A private ceremony has been conducted for Umezu-sensei.

Square Enix’s Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine ran the series Kinsou no Vermeil: Gakeppuchi Majutsushi wa Saikyou no Yakusai to Mahou Sekai wo Tsukisusumu from August 10, 2018, through June 12^th, 2026. Kouta Amana penned the story, with Youko Umezu providing the illustrations. Square Enix gathered the chapters into eleven bound volumes. The manga is available in English via the Manga UP! Global website and Comikey.

Staple Entertainment turned the manga into a summer 2022 television series. Takashi Naoya helmed the direction, with Tatsuya Takahashi handling the scripts and Kiyoshi Tateishi designing the characters. HIDIVE offers both subtitled and dubbed versions of the anime in the United States and selected other markets.

Vermeil in Gold’s primary voice actors are:

• Maaya Uchida portrays Vermeil
• Yuuya Hirose portrays Alto Goldfilled
• Wakana Kuramochi portrays Lilia Kudelfaate

Alto Goldfilled, a diligent student at Ortigia Academy of Magic, struggles to master even the simplest magical ability: summoning a familiar. In a pinch, he consults a dusty grimoire hoping it will solve his magical troubles. His experiment succeeds, but not as intended. He ends up conjuring a demon named Vermeil. Shockingly, she becomes infatuated with Alto for releasing her and constantly seeks playful interactions with him.
