Built on Tomato Soup’s prize‑winning manga A Witch’s Life in Mongol, the series takes place in the 13th‑century Mongol Empire and centers on Sitara, a girl who endures a harsh destiny by using intellect instead of brute strength. After losing all she had to the empire’s conquests, she enters the royal court seeking vengeance, where her path crosses with Töregene, a woman who also despises the empire.

Tomato Soup both writes and illustrates the historical manga series A Witch’s Life in Mongol (Tenmaku no Jadugaru), which started on Akita Shoten’s Souffle website in September 2021. As of April 2025, five volumes have appeared. The work topped Takarajimasha’s “This Manga is Amazing! 2023” (Women’s Edition) and was honored twice in the Manga Taisho Awards (2023 and 2024). The official synopsis:
Once upon a time, in the 13th‑century slave markets of Iran, a young girl existed. This narrative follows a sorceress who manipulated an entire continent. After the loss of her mother and being uprooted from her native land, Sitara found herself completely alone. Being still youthful, lacking survival skills, and with no future prospects, she was taken in by Fatima, a compassionate woman from a scholarly family. “Study and become wise, and no matter what hardships arise, you’ll know the best path forward,” Fatima told her. Profoundly affected by the advice of Fatima’s son, Muhammad, Sitara recognized the power and value of knowledge, prompting her to deepen her learning. She hopes one day to meet Muhammad again, as he has embarked on a quest for wisdom. Meanwhile, under Emperor Genghis Khan’s rule, the Mongol Empire continues its relentless conquest, subjugating nations and extending its reach worldwide. This unbridled ambition eventually arrives at Sitara’s city, where the empire’s fourth prince, Tolui, ends her tranquil life. Having lost everything, Sitara swears vengeance against the all‑consuming empire.
