PANGANDARAN, Thecuy.com—Shifting from in‑person to online shopping habits has impacted the survival of traditional merchants, causing their income to plummet, including those in traditional markets.

Supendi, Head of Trade Development and Metrology at the Pangandaran Regency Cooperative, SME, Trade, and Industry Service, said he often hears direct complaints from traders during his visits to traditional markets.

“I frequently shop at the market while observing the situation and chatting with traders. It turns out that almost all of them complain about the lack of customers,” he told Radar on Monday (27/7/2026).

According to him, the decline in the number of buyers is most acutely felt by non‑staple goods traders, especially clothing and accessories sellers.

“Take clock sellers as an example. They admit that they now rarely sell new items. Customers who come are mostly there for servicing or replacing watch batteries,” he said.

He acknowledged that the trend of shopping through online marketplaces has a significant impact on traders. He encouraged traditional merchants to start using digital platforms to expand their market reach.

“The solution is to start selling online as well. Don’t get left behind and just complain. Traders must be able to keep up with technological developments,” he said.

He noted that the sluggish transaction activity is not only occurring in Pangandaran Regency’s traditional markets but also in several other areas.

“It’s not just Pangandaran; the situation is almost identical in other regencies,” he said.

As an effort to help traders adapt, his office has provided various forms of coaching, from digital marketing training, product packaging techniques, to assistance in business licensing procedures. (Deni Nurdiansah)
