Education and direct practice at the Islamic boarding school

The main presentation was delivered by Catherine Dwi Augusthi, an ergonomics and work physiology specialist from Unsri’s Faculty of Medicine. She highlighted the significance of proper sitting posture and explained the possible physiological consequences of poor sitting habits. Incorrect posture is said to affect not only musculoskeletal health but also the digestive system, nervous system, and blood circulation.

To enhance comprehension, the Unsri team conducted a live demonstration. A team member, M. Iman Tarmizi Thaher, modeled correct sitting posture together with a representative santri. Participants were guided to observe the alignment of their head, back, legs, and overall body while reading or studying.

In addition to the lecture, the students took part in guided exercises and simulations using posture‑support devices. During this session, the team introduced a Back Posture Magnetic Corrector to maintain shoulder and spinal alignment, as well as an ergonomic reading stand that helps keep the head and neck in a more comfortable position while reading.

Focusing on healthy habits and program sustainability

The activity went beyond theory. The students were also guided through muscle‑stretching exercises in both standing and sitting positions to better grasp simple routines that can be done between study sessions. Unsri also showcased a Scan Body Composition Monitor as a tool for tracking body composition.

According to the implementing team, this education is crucial for teenagers, including santri, as school‑age groups are prone to musculoskeletal disorders caused by poor postural habits. Before delivering the material, the team assessed baseline knowledge through questionnaires and visual observation of participants’ sitting positions. The initial findings indicated that most participants were not sitting with an optimal posture.

To ensure the program’s continuation, Unsri has trained selected santri to serve as instructors for physical exercises and body flexibility within the boarding school environment. This approach aims to sustain healthy sitting habits and fitness awareness beyond the event’s conclusion.

The community service initiative is noted to align with Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) number three, focusing on good health and well‑being. By providing such education, Unsri aims to help santri recognize the importance of maintaining proper posture from their teenage years, ensuring that learning remains comfortable and focused.
