TASIKMALAYA, Thecuy.com – The rise of umrah travel promotions sent through SMS and WhatsApp is starting to worry the public. Numerous offers featuring cheap price incentives and instalment payment plans keep appearing. Moreover, such promotions often arrive unasked for and are repeatedly sent.
One example is the experience of Enung Nuraeni (56). She said she once received an umrah offer from a travel agency that included an instalment payment scheme. In the offer, prospective pilgrims only needed to pay a down payment (DP) as an initial registration fee. The amount of the DP was said to be adjustable to the prospective pilgrim’s capacity.
“Let me put it this way, for instance the umrah cost is Rp30 million, then as prospective pilgrims we only pay the DP. The amount depends on what we have. It could be Rp5 million, there are also those that are Rp3 million,” she explained.

Not only the down payment, the travel agency also provides flexibility in determining the repayment period. The remaining travel cost can be paid in stages according to agreement. Additionally, prospective pilgrims who successfully bring in others are said to have the opportunity to receive a bonus.
“Yes, the DP that we paid earlier depends on how long we can afford to pay in instalments. It’s like an instalment plan, Sir. Pilgrims are free to choose, and if they can bring other pilgrims, they’re said to get a bonus,” she said.
Responding to the phenomenon, the Head of the Hajj and Umrah Department of Tasikmalaya City, Husna Mustopa, reminded residents not to be easily swayed by various umrah travel offers, especially those that propose prices far below market rates.
According to him, prospective pilgrims must ensure that the travel agency they choose holds an official licence as a Umrah Travel Organizer (PPIU) from the Ministry of Religion. Apart from legality, the public is also urged to confirm the clarity of travel facilities, ranging from departure and return tickets, visas to the presence of mutawif or pilgrim companions during the pilgrimage in the Holy Land.
“Make sure also the return and departure tickets, including the visa and the mutawif or its companion. Because, there was an incident where a group of pilgrims were able to depart but could not return, and were eventually left stranded,” said Husna.
He also suggested that the public choose a travel agency that has an office or home base in the nearest area. That way, prospective pilgrims can more easily carry out verification or coordination in case of problems.
