Thecuy.com, Banyuwangi – The poverty rate in Banyuwangi continues to decline. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the poverty rate in the area fell from 6.13 percent in 2025 to 5.6 percent in 2026, a reduction of 0.53 points.

Over the past five years, this downward trend has also been consistent. Banyuwangi’s poverty rate was recorded at 8.07 percent in 2021, then fell to 7.51 percent in 2022, 7.34 percent in 2023, 6.54 percent in 2024, 6.13 percent in 2025, and 5.6 percent in 2026.

The Head of BPS Banyuwangi, Abdus Salam, said that the number of poor people in March 2026 reached 91,570. This figure decreased by 8,560 compared to the same period the previous year. This achievement also marks the lowest poverty rate in Banyuwangi since 2004.

Abdus explained that the reduction in poverty is not only reflected in the decline of the percentage and number of poor people, but also in the improvement of the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and the Poverty Severity Index (P2). These two indicators illustrate the average distance of poor people’s expenditure from the poverty line and the level of expenditure inequality among the poor.

According to him, the dynamics of poverty are influenced by many factors, ranging from developments in people’s income, employment opportunities, economic activities, to changes in the price of basic necessities, especially food. Therefore, maintaining food price stability and efforts to preserve the purchasing power of low-income groups are important in poverty control.

Bupati Banyuwangi Ipuk Fiestiandani said that the decline in the poverty rate is the result of joint efforts and collaboration among various parties, including community support for poverty alleviation programs implemented by the local government.

Ipuk said that Banyuwangi is implementing four main strategies. First, reducing the expenditure burden of the poor and vulnerable through social assistance and fulfillment of basic needs. Among the programs running is Banyuwangi Berbagi, which involves civil servants and the community to distribute food packages and protein-rich food items to poor residents in decile 1 and 2 by name by address. In addition, there is Rantang Kasih, which provides nutritious meals every day for poor elderly living alone.

Second, the local government promotes the empowerment and income growth of the community through the UMKM Naik Kelas program, Warung Naik Kelas (Wenak), exemption of market trader fees, and free shipping assistance for MSMEs.

Third, Banyuwangi strives to break the inter-generational poverty cycle by improving access to education and scholarships for children from low-income families. Ipuk also mentioned the Banyuwangi Ayo Kursus program, which provides free skills training and business equipment assistance for SMK alumni and training participants to enable them to start their own businesses.

Fourth, the government continues to strengthen poverty alleviation through various forms of support that are distributed gradually to reach the communities in need.

The decline in poverty in Banyuwangi indicates that social intervention, economic empowerment, and access to education are moving in the same direction. However, BPS emphasizes that people’s economic factors and the stability of basic commodity prices must remain maintained so that this positive trend continues.
