Thecuy.com โ€“ Marc Marquez lead the practice session for MotoGP Malaysia at Sepang Circuit on Friday afternoon despite a fall at Turn 15. The Ducati Lenovo Team rider posted the fastest lap at 1 minute 57.000 seconds and stayed on top after returning to the track on a spare bike.

These results put Marquez marginally ahead of Alex Marquez by 0.109 seconds, who finished second for BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP. Ai Ogura was a surprise in this session, cracking the top three together with the Trackhouse MotoGP Team.

Tight battle up front

Behind Marc Marquez and Alex Marquez, Pedro Acosta was the quickest RC16 rider, finishing fourth for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing. Fabio Di Giannantonio of Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team rounded out the top five, followed by Marco Bezzecchi, representing Aprilia Racing, in sixth place.

Two Red Bull KTM Tech3 riders, Enea Bastianini and Maverick Vinales, also secured direct spots in the second qualifying session after finishing seventh and eighth respectively.

Jorge Martin and Fabio Quartararo eliminated to Q1

A different fate befell Jorge Martin. The Aprilia Racing rider completed only three laps before ending the practice session early. He almost crashed when passing Turn 12. The decision to conserve energy was reportedly made together with the team and MotoGP Medical Director, Dr. Angel Charte, to ensure his physical condition was ready for qualifying.

The practice session was temporarily halted by a red flag after Iker Lecuona’s front fender was destroyed and scattered on the back straight of Sepang. The situation also impacted the mid-pack battle, including Francesco Bagnaia, Johann Zarco, and Fabio Quartararo, who had to start their qualification effort from Q1 after failing to break into the top ten or falling at the end of the session.

With these results, Marquez has shown consistency from the start of race weekend in Sepang. Meanwhile, the list of riders who must go through Q1 suggests that the battle for qualification will remain tight.
