CIAMIS, Thecuy.com – Ciamis Regent Herdiat Sunarya urged students to become pioneers of unity, foster harmony, and actively participate in driving the community’s economy and protecting the environment. Students are also encouraged to enhance their personal development to meet contemporary challenges while preserving religious values and the traditional pesantren culture.
The message was delivered by Herdiat as he presided over the 2026 National Santri Day commemoration ceremony for Ciamis Regency, held at the Ciamis Regent’s Hall on Thursday (22/10/2026).
Herdiat stated that National Santri Day, observed annually on October 22, serves as a time to honor the contributions and struggles of religious scholars and students in safeguarding Indonesia’s independence. This observance also underscores the crucial role of santri in preserving national integrity and supporting development efforts.
Dozens of thousands of devotees participated in a Tasikmalaya prayer rally at Manonjaya Square, while Councillor Iyam Maryani urged stronger child protection following the Bantarkalong Tasikmalaya case that served as a warning.
“I advise students not to be easily divided by differences, as the spirit of togetherness must be continuously nurtured so that they can provide tangible contributions to society, the region, and the nation,” he said while delivering his address.
“Let us preserve unity and the spirit of mutual cooperation, which are vital forces in confronting the nation’s various challenges,” he added.
Herdiat also encouraged students, especially those in Ciamis Regency, to continuously enhance their capabilities, uphold the noble pesantren traditions, and remain open to contemporary developments. In his view, students must possess strong character to effectively participate in diverse aspects of life.
He stated that students are expected to mature into a generation characterized by honesty, discipline, independence, and noble morals.
He assessed that Islamic boarding schools occupy a strategic position in regional development, serving not only as places for religious learning but also as spaces for character formation, fostering independence, strengthening brotherhood, and cultivating social concern.
Consequently, regional development requires the involvement of all elements, ranging from government, religious leaders, pesantren, educational institutions, to the community.
He stated, “Regional development demands a robust synergy among government, religious leaders, pesantren, educational institutions, and all community elements. Such collaboration constitutes a crucial asset for realizing a Ciamis Regency that progresses and thrives while preserving religious values and local wisdom.”
A Gerindra mobile clinic visited Cineam Tasikmalaya, providing free medical treatment to hundreds of residents, while MP Ahmad Doli Kurnia highlighted the issue of school safety after a bullying case resulted in a fatality.
Beyond enhancing religious knowledge, Herdiat stressed the importance of acquiring knowledge and skills aligned with contemporary needs. Equipped with such competencies, students are expected not only to preserve Islamic values but also to offer solutions to various social and economic challenges within the community.
