On October 21, several major manga and digital publishing services went into emergency maintenance after companies acted to protect their operations following the revelation of two severe flaws in PHP, a language commonly used on the internet.
The flaws, identified as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, enable unauthenticated remote code execution on vulnerable servers. The PHP development team assigned both a severity rating of 9.2 under CVSS 4.0 and urged users to apply patches immediately. Security releases—PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35—were issued on October 21. According to PHP, any server handling web traffic could be at risk, with Apache mod_php configurations especially exposed.
As a result, preventive maintenance actions have been taken worldwide on platforms, encompassing several Japanese services that manga readers use.
Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket explicitly referenced an urgent PHP security patch in its notice of the emergency upkeep. Its mobile app and website went offline at 10:30 p.m. JST on October 21, with no initial restoration time announced. The service later noted that readers were awaiting fresh chapters and that technicians were working to bring back functionality without compromising safety.
K MANGA also began emergency maintenance at the same time, citing a “critical security update.” The platform warned that upcoming chapter releases could be delayed as the work continues into October 22.
Shueisha’s MANGA Plus entered maintenance starting at 9:00 p.m. JST on October 21. Its announcement did not disclose the specific reason behind the downtime.
Niconico Manga halted all services at 7:00 p.m. JST on October 21, planning to resume at 10:00 a.m. on October 22. The company indicated that a significant security flaw was discovered in a piece of software it employs, without naming PHP.
BOOK☆WALKER likewise launched emergency maintenance after detecting a serious vulnerability in its software stack. The company clarified that it had not suffered a direct breach and expected services to be back online by early October 22.
A title that may be affected by the downtime is Saka Mikami’s The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity. Magazine Pocket scheduled its next Japanese release for October 22, after Chapter 204 on October 8. K MANGA also lists Chapter 205, “Saku’s Answer,” set for October 21, and separately cautioned that upcoming releases could be postponed while maintenance is ongoing. Neither Magazine Pocket nor K MANGA mentioned Chapter 205 specifically in their outage notices.
The swift action follows earlier alerts from the PHP security team and CERT‑EU. CERT‑EU urged organizations to get ready to apply patches without delay, and PHP has stated that updating is the only complete fix for the flaws.
Crucially, the maintenance alerts do not on their own suggest that the manga platforms were compromised. Japan’s Information‑technology Promotion Agency noted that, when it issued its warning, it had not independently verified any exploits of the two PHP flaws and that the advisory was a preventive measure.
When services will be fully restored still hinges on each platform’s security efforts, and further announcements are likely to appear on their official sources.
