The remarks were issued as Prabowo’s government entered its second year on 20 October.
Iwan noted that the sustained political stability throughout Prabowo’s two‑year tenure can bolster continued development. Nonetheless, this situation should not serve as justification to curb criticism, dismiss opposition, or homogenize political perspectives.

Iwan stressed that the yardstick of democracy is not merely a calm political atmosphere but also includes the public’s liberty to voice opinions, the press’s watchdog role, substantive parliamentary work, and impartial law enforcement. He warned, “Absent substantial oversight, government policies risk escaping proper evaluation.”
He further argued that strong parliamentary political backing should be counterbalanced by an effective exercise of oversight duties by the House of Representatives. Iwan also pointed out that a thriving democracy requires a critical opposition, an independent press, an active civil society, and a judiciary capable of exercising its authority independently.
Harapan untuk Konsolidasi Politik
Iwan underscored that public criticism ought to be regarded as feedback for policy improvement rather than as a threat to the government. “It is essential to preserve the independence of state institutions, reinforce the rule of law, and guarantee that decision‑making is transparent and accountable,” he added.
He contended that political stability should not be assessed solely by harmonious elite relations or the magnitude of governmental coalition support, but also by public trust in democratic institutions. As Prabowo’s administration moves into its second year, Iwan hopes that political consolidation will not compromise democratic quality and public space for overseeing power.
