Thecuy.com – The atmosphere of the Black Box Studio in Building Q, Petra Christian University (UK Petra) campus in Surabaya was plunged into deep darkness on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. From the gloom, captivating blue and yellow light began to glow, carrying the audience across language and cultural boundaries.

Succursale 101, a leading contemporary puppet theater group from Reims, France, successfully staged the poetic performance titled Petit Bleu et Petit Jaune (Little Blue and Little Yellow). The show, adapted from a legendary children’s book by Italian illustrator Leo Lionni, marked the conclusion of their cultural tour in Indonesia.

Organized through a collaboration between the Institut Français d’Indonésie (IFI) Surabaya and the English Literature Study Program of the Faculty of Humanities and Creative Industries at UK Petra, the free event attracted widespread enthusiasm from students, scholars, and art enthusiasts.

Show Theme

This 30-minute performance centered on the core themes of friendship, identity, and acceptance of differences. The tale of two color characters embracing until they turned green conveys a profound meaning. Upon returning home, their parents failed to recognize them, sparking a bright yet deeply philosophical visual storyline.

Dialogue in Indonesian

Strikingly, despite being conceived and developed in France, all dialogues in the performance were delivered fluently in Indonesian. This transcultural decision aimed to make the story feel warm and immediately accessible to the domestic audience.

Acknowledgments from Relevant Parties

Strong appreciation for the realization of this international event was voiced by Petra Theater’s Artistic Director, Melinda. Representing the host institution, she expressed pride in welcoming such a large-scale performance to the UK Petra campus. “It is a great honor for us to host this extraordinary performance. We have been looking forward to this moment for almost 15 years to experience it firsthand,” said Melinda in her opening remarks.

In agreement with Melinda, IFI Surabaya Director Vincent Padar also praised the close cultural collaboration between his institution and the local campus. He found the UK Petra Black Box Studio to be highly accurate in supporting the artistic integrity of the performance. “I am very grateful that we can hold this event in such a beautiful space. In Surabaya, UK Petra’s Black Box Studio is one of the best facilities capable of meeting the total darkness technical specifications for the lighting magic and shadow theater of this performance,” said Vincent Padar.

Furthermore, Vincent reflected on the profound moral message that emanated from the simple visual performance. In his view, the narrative delivered by Succursale 101 holds universal humanistic values that resonate across all age groups.
