TASIKMALAYA, Thecuy.com – The fire protection system, which includes pillar hydrants and Siamese connections located at the front of the Regional Secretariat (Setda) of Tasikmalaya Regency, is reported to have been out of operation since 2010.

This situation means that the facilities intended to support fire handling in the government’s central area cannot be relied upon during emergencies.

The head of the Tasikmalaya Regency’s Firefighting UPTD, Agus Toni, confirmed the situation. He stated that the pillar hydrants and Siamese connections at the Setda’s yard have long been non-functional.

The Law Number 28 of 2002 concerning Buildings states that fire safety includes active protection systems, such as equipment capable of detecting and extinguishing fires.

The explanation of the law also designates the hydrant system as one of the active fire protection components used to extinguish fires.

Technical provisions concerning fire protection systems are also governed by the Regulation of the Minister of Public Works Number 26/PRT/M/2008 on Technical Requirements for Fire Protection Systems in Buildings and the Environment. This regulation covers various equipment, components, and fire protection facilities, including both active and passive protection systems.

Functionally, a hydrant serves as a water source that firefighters can utilize during fire suppression. Consequently, the presence of such facilities is insufficient if only considered physically; the network, water supply, pressure, connections, and accessibility must also be ensured to be operational.

The issue has become increasingly critical as the hydrant system in the Setda area has reportedly been non-functional for approximately 16 years. Building managers, together with relevant agencies, need to verify the condition of all fire protection facilities within the governmental complex.
