The Failure at God School is a supernatural shojo series penned by Natsu Hyuga—creator of The Apothecary Diaries—and illustrated by Modomu Akagawara, and it has just been confirmed to receive a television anime adaptation.
The narrative unfolds in present‑day Japan, where individuals with occult powers can become shrine deities. The focus is on Nagi, a teenager who thinks she lacks any abilities. When she employs a method originally designed to suppress her telepathic twin brother’s powers to defend herself from an assault, she unexpectedly uncovers her own latent supernatural gifts and is admitted to an academy that educates the next generation of gods.
The two creators commented:
Natsu Hyuga (story):
“The Failure at God School has been green‑lit for an anime adaptation. We’ll finally see Nagi, Takeru, Tsukuyomi and Tota come alive on screen, hearing their voices and movements. It’s an amazing thrill, and I’m grateful to the entire team and the fans who have supported us. Looking back, I began writing this series after an editor told me, “This is for Hana to Yume, and Akagawara‑sensei will illustrate it.” Now it’s happening! All I can do now is keep writing and pray to the deities. Thank you for your continued support.”
Modomu Akagawara (art):
“I’m thrilled that The Failure at God School is being turned into a TV anime! As the illustrator of the manga, I’m overjoyed. I’m deeply grateful to the original author Natsu Hyuga, our editors, the anime production crew, everyone who contributed, and the readers who have kept us going. I also look forward to watching the school for gods and its characters become animated and hear them speak, just like any fan.”
A teaser visual was also revealed:
The Failure at God School began its run in Hakusensha’s Hana to Yume magazine in August 2021. The English version is released by Yen Press, who summarize Volume 1 as follows:
Nagi just wants a quiet life, but gods are supposed to help ordinary girls, not drag her into Japan’s top magical academy. In today’s world, even supernatural issues get bureaucratic solutions: there’s a government‑run classification system, specialized schools, and licenses for those with mysterious powers. Anyone who shows a miracle can be called a Himiko, but only fully certified individuals earn the title of God. High‑schooler Nagi urgently needs a deity after her grandmother’s death leaves the family shrine without divine presence, and her reclusive twin brother—a Himiko—offers no help. Yet, if she’s not careful, her quest for a god could lead her into far more unexpected circumstances.
The Apothecary Diaries currently has many new endeavors in the pipeline, such as a third season of its television series, a cinematic release, its debut video‑game title, and a live‑action adaptation.
