Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising unveiled a fresh key visual and trailer. Within four days of its August 28 debut in Japan, the film eclipsed 1 billion yen at the domestic box office and continues to run in theaters.
After four days, Walpurgisnacht Rising outperformed the early sales of its predecessor, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion. When Rebellion premiered in 2013, it eventually grossed over 2 billion yen at Japan’s box office.
Walpurgisnacht Rising represents the inaugural fresh installment in the core Madoka Magica franchise in 13 years, acting as a sequel to Rebellion. The production was overseen by Studio SHAFT, directed by Yukihiro Miyamato and chief‑directed by Akiyuki Shinbo. The latest trailer can be viewed below.
A third key visual, crafted by the series’ original character designer Ume Aoki, was also disclosed.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica, the creation of the Magica Quartet— Akiyuki Shinbo, Ume Aoki, Gen Urobuchi, and producer Atsuhiro Iwakami—debuted in January 2011. The series comprised 12 episodes, finishing in April of that year, with its concluding two episodes postponed after the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Having concluded its central narrative on television, the Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise has since diversified into multiple media, encompassing manga adaptations, a Nitroplus novel, a dedicated magazine, and video games. In October 2012, two recap films titled Beginnings and Eternal were launched, summarizing the anime’s storyline while incorporating fresh material. A third cinematic entry, Rebellion, arrived in October 2013, advancing the tale with a new plot that functioned as a prequel to Walpurgisnacht. All these films were reissued on Ultra HD Blu‑ray on January 29, 2025.
Beyond the flagship series, the Magia Record spin‑off features its own anime adaptation, produced by Studio SHAFT, as well as a mobile title. The forthcoming mobile game, Magia Exedra, debuted on March 27, 2025, across iOS, Android, and Windows platforms.
