Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising crossed the 1‑billion‑yen threshold at Japanese theaters within its opening four days. Additionally, a fresh CM featuring unseen scenes from the movie was unveiled.

The film landed in Japanese cinemas on August 28 and hit the 1‑billion‑yen milestone by August 31. It topped both ticket sales and revenue charts for its opening weekend. After four days, Walpurgisnacht Rising is outpacing the early performance of the series’ prior installment, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion. Rebellion, which debuted in 2013, ultimately grossed over 2 billion yen domestically.

Walpurgisnacht Rising marks the series’ first fresh entry in 13 years, continuing the storyline of Rebellion. The production was handled by Studio SHAFT, with Akiyuki Shinbo overseeing as chief director and Yukihiro Miyamato serving as director.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica was conceived by the Magica Quartet—Akiyuki Shinbo, Ume Aoki, Gen Urobuchi, and producer Atsuhiro Iwakami—and made its debut in January 2011. The anime spanned 12 episodes, wrapping up in April of that year, though the last two episodes faced postponement because of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

After the televised series concluded its core narrative, the Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise diversified into numerous media forms, such as manga adaptations, a Nitroplus novel, a specialty magazine, and video games. In October 2012, two recap movies—Beginnings and Eternal—were issued, summarizing the anime’s plot while incorporating fresh content. Another film, Rebellion, arrived in October 2013, advancing the saga with an original tale that acted as a prequel to Walpurgisnacht. These titles were reissued on Ultra HD Blu‑ray on January 29, 2025.

Alongside the principal series, the Magia Record spin‑off has received its own anime adaptation produced by Studio SHAFT, plus a mobile game. The fresh mobile title, Magia Exedra, debuted on March 27, 2025, across iOS, Android, and Windows platforms.
