A brand new full‑length documentary about Osamu Tezuka, titled TEZUKA! God of Manga, has debuted a Kickstarter fundraiser.
The film, helmed by Peabody‑winning director Jason Andrew Cohn and produced by Bread & Butter Films together with Tezuka Productions, will delve into the life, oeuvre, and worldwide impact of Tezuka, the iconic figure celebrated as the “God of Manga.”
Interviews will be conducted with numerous creators, academics, and industry veterans who have been shaped by Tezuka’s influence, such as Katsuhiro Otomo, Riyoko Ikeda, Naoki Urasawa, Go Nagai, Yoshiyuki Tomino, Masao Maruyama, Rintaro, Ada Palmer, Fred Schodt, Samuel Sattin, Jorge R. Gutierrez, Helen McCarthy, and Natsu Onoda Power. Should the Kickstarter succeed, the producers intend to secure additional conversations with Paul Pope and Ron Wimberly.
In the Kickstarter drive, backers will receive exclusive commemorative art prints that pay homage to Tezuka’s creations and characters. The contributing artists are Jeff Lemire, Matt Kindt, Shinichi Ishizuka, Elsa Charretier, Yuko Shimizu, Gurihuru, Jesse Lonergan, Dave Baker, Jorge R. Gutierrez, and Nicole Goux.

The documentary will be structured in three acts, starting with his upbringing near Osaka amid and after the Pacific War, proceeding to his ascent as a manga trailblazer and the mind behind Astro Boy, the nation’s inaugural weekly animated TV series launched in 1963, and concluding with an analysis of the criticism he encountered during the gekiga period and his subsequent comeback via titles like Phoenix and Black Jack.
Beyond the art prints, the Kickstarter pledge stack features Tezuka Productions merchandise, a limited‑edition Blu‑ray of the completed movie, and assorted perk offerings for backers.
The release of TEZUKA! God of Manga is slated for 2028, aligning with what would have been Tezuka’s 100th birthday.
