On Monday (7/9/2026), 100 free masks were distributed to motorists as a precautionary step against possible impacts from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.

The mask distribution took place at the Rancabango 3 intersection, on Letnan Harun Street, Tasikmalaya City. For two hours, from 10.00 to 12.00 WIB, officers targeted both two‑wheeled and four‑wheeled vehicle users passing by.

This measure reflects the police’s early warning awareness regarding the possibility of volcanic ash being carried by wind to areas far from the eruption source.

Tasikmalaya City Police Chief, AKBP Andik Eko Siswanto, through the Traffic Chief, AKP Haga Deo Harefa, stated that the mask distribution is part of the police’s concern for public safety and health.

“We are handing out masks to drivers as a preventive measure against the impacts of the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption. Volcanic ash can affect breathing and visibility while driving,” AKP Haga told reporters.

According to him, volcanic ash can not only affect the respiratory system but also reduce a driver’s visibility if it is carried by wind and reaches areas where people live.

Therefore, residents are urged not to panic but to remain vigilant. Information about the developments of Mount Anak Krakatau’s condition should also refer to official sources, especially BMKG and BPBD.

The Traffic Police also urged residents who need to be outdoors to use simple protection, such as masks, glasses, and long jackets.

This step is considered effective in reducing direct exposure if volcanic ash particles are carried by wind into Tasikmalaya City.

“Prioritize safety. If the air quality feels poor, consider postponing your journey. For those experiencing cough or shortness of breath symptoms, seek medical attention at the nearest health facility immediately,” he said.

Even though there have been no recorded cases of volcanic ash rain in Tasikmalaya City up until the event concluded, the police chose to take early preventive measures.

The principle is simple: masks are distributed before they are needed, not after the air has already become problematic.
