The Apothecary Diaries will soon become a live‑action drama, starring Mana Ashida as the lead character Maomao. The series will be available exclusively on Prime Video worldwide starting in 2028.
The project is a joint production of TOHO and Amazon MGM Studios. Yuki Saito is set to direct, with Erika Yoshida penning the script. Alongside the news, a teaser image showing Ashida in the role of Maomao has been released.
Mana Ashida, who had admired Natsu Hyuga’s books prior to this casting, shared her thoughts on stepping into the main part:
“I was already a big fan of the novels, so I felt a lot of pressure about joining such a beloved story. Working with a cast and crew who truly respected the source material and paid close attention to every detail made the shoot feel like I could give my all to Maomao and the project. There were times when my fan emotions surged and I could barely contain my excitement. Sharing that thrill with both long‑time readers and newcomers would make me incredibly happy, and I’m excited for everyone to look forward to the premiere.”
“Adapting this into a live‑action show has been a long journey. The progress is so impressive that I feel confident leaving the vision entirely to the team, knowing novels and movies are distinct mediums.
I’m truly thankful to the whole production crew; each of them has done an excellent job.
When Mana Ashida was cast as Maomao, I instantly thought, “She’ll handle this perfectly,” and meeting her confirmed it—‘That’s definitely Maomao!’
Visiting the set multiple times exposed me to the lavish sets and costumes, making me wonder how much money was poured into the production.
Every aspect—from the script and props to hair, makeup, etiquette guidance, and even the characters’ walk—shows meticulous care, and I believe the result will satisfy everyone.
One time I took my niece to a set visit and saw the actor portraying Jinshi; her eyes lit up with joy.
Concerned she might develop unrealistic expectations, I gently covered her eyes, whispering, “A real Jinshi right here.”
The role of Jinshi has not been cast yet.
Natsu Hyuga pens the The Apothecary Diaries novels, illustrated by Toko Shino, and they are published by Shunfunotomo. There are two manga versions: one by Itsuki Nanao and Nekokurage, and another entirely by Minoji Kurata.
J‑Novel Club releases the book in English, and Square Enix handles the manga editions. The plot centers on Maomao, a skilled apothecary thrust into the imperial court as a low‑ranking attendant. Unwilling to remain passive, she steps in to aid Jinshi, the palace’s charismatic official.
Season 3 of the The Apothecary Diaries anime will launch on October 2, 2026, followed by a second cour slated for April 2027, with an original movie scheduled to bridge the two installments.
