Thecuy.com, Makassar – Two successive accidents involving TNI aircraft occurred at Sultan Hasanuddin Airport, Makassar over two consecutive days. On Monday (24/8), a Sukhoi fighter jet from the TNI Air Force overran and left the western end of the runway, while the following day a Casa aircraft from the TNI Navy slid off runway 03‑21 after a tyre burst.

The Sukhoi incident took place at around 11.00 WITA on the western side of runway 13. The aircraft, belonging to Skadron Udara 11, departed the runway and came to rest in a nearby grassy area just beyond the base’s perimeter fence bordering the main road. The event drew the attention of passing motorists, leading to temporary traffic congestion in the vicinity. As of now, the TNI‑AF has not issued any official statement regarding the sequence of events, the condition of the plane, or the status of the pilot.

The following day, Tuesday (25/8) at 11.25 WITA, a Casa NC 212‑200 Aviocar bearing tail number U‑6215, operated by Skadron Udara 600 of Wing Udara 2 Puspenerbal (TNI‑Navy), slid off runway 03‑21. The incident was caused by a burst main right tyre during landing, which caused the aircraft to veer to the right and leave the runway edge by approximately 26.2 metres.

Head of Public Relations for Puspenerbal, Lieutenant Colonel Eko Hadi Setyawan, said that the three crew members, led by Captain Navy (P) Galih, followed safety procedures by executing an emergency engine cut‑out in accordance with SOP, resulting in all three being unharmed. On‑site teams promptly secured the area, coordinated with Lanud Sultan Hasanuddin and the airport operator, replaced the tyre, and moved the aircraft to the apron of Lanud Hasanuddin. Airport operations continued normally using the east‑west runway (runway 13‑31).

The accidents have attracted public attention because they occurred consecutively on the same runway, despite involving different aircraft types and distinct causes. Nonetheless, there have been no reports of significant disruptions to commercial flight operations at Sultan Hasanuddin Airport.

In the meantime, concerning reports that Indonesia has entered a scheme for F‑15 fighter jet contracts with the United States, the Indonesian Ministry of Defence confirmed that there are no current procurement plans and no Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) has been activated. The F‑15 contract announced by the US government is part of the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme that includes several nations, among them Indonesia, yet no official follow‑up has been issued by the Indonesian authorities to date.

These incidents underscore the necessity of rigorous oversight and meticulous maintenance of the military aircraft fleet to safeguard pilots and ensure smooth airport operations. Technical inspections of the Casa aircraft are ongoing to verify its condition and to avert similar occurrences in the future.
