Hunter x Hunter creator Yoshihiro Togashi surprised fans with a hidden crossover in his tribute illustration that marks the comeback of FAIRY TAIL. The piece was made to honor Hiro Mashima’s brief new series, FAIRY TAIL: RE:FANTASIA, and shows protagonist Natsu Dragneel alongside several well‑known characters lurking in the backdrop.
Behind Natsu stand Gon Freecss, Killua Zoldyck, Kurapika and Leorio Paradinight; all were drawn by Togashi for the artwork. You can view it beneath this text.
Togashi is among multiple manga artists who have created special art for FAIRY TAIL’s 20‑year celebration. The other contributors are George Morikawa (Hajime no Ippo), Koji Seo (The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses), Miki Yoshikawa (A Couple of Cuckoos), Atsuo Ueda (FAIRY TAIL: 100 Years Quest) and Yudetamago (Kinnikuman).
These artworks will also appear in the deluxe release of the inaugural FAIRY TAIL: RE:FANTASIA book, set to hit shelves on October 16. The special version includes 16 postcards showcasing Mashima’s own drawings together with the guest‑artist pieces.
The short series FAIRY TAIL: RE:FANTASIA launched in Weekly Shonen Magazine Issue #35, representing Hiro Mashima’s first personal work on a new FAIRY TAIL manga after the main story ended in 2017. This project is included in the franchise’s 20‑year anniversary festivities.
FAIRY TAIL is a Japanese manga created by Hiro Mashima; it was his third main series following Rave Master and Edens Zero. It ran in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine from August 2006 until July 2017 and was collected into 63 volumes, with more than 72 million copies sold worldwide.
Kodansha USA holds the English license and the title can be read digitally via K MANGA. The plot summary reads:
A young wizard named Lucy dreams of joining Fairy Tail, an association of the strongest magic users. Instead, she is captured by a crew of roguish pirates commanded by a cunning mage. Her only salvation is Natsu, a peculiar traveler she meets on her journey. Natsu is far from a typical hero—he suffers from motion sickness, has a hearty appetite, and his closest companion is a talking cat. With such unlikely allies, might Lucy be better off with her foes?
The original series was adapted into a television show spanning 328 episodes and spawned many spin‑offs, specials and films. Its sequel, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, also received an anime covering 25 episodes that ran from July 2024 through January 2025.
