In early July 2026 the Radar Tasik report noted that the Community‑Based Total Sanitation (STBM) Pillar 4—focused on household waste handling—in Tasikmalaya City still lags behind. Up to the middle of 2026 only 31.9 % of the target has been realised, a figure far short of the desired 75 %.

On Monday, 6 July 2026 a Kota Sehat coordination meeting was held in the Bappelitbangda auditorium. Attendees included officials from Bappelitbangda, the Health Department, the Environmental Agency, district heads, village chiefs, representatives from dozens of health centres, the Kota Sehat Team and the Kota Sehat Forum.

The discussion concentrated on accelerating progress in the weakest pillar, with household waste management highlighted as a crucial benchmark for a healthy city designation.

According to Undang Hendiana, the daily chairman of the Kota Sehat Forum for Tasikmalaya, the meeting was arranged to align cross‑sector efforts so that STBM improvements would not be fragmented. He pointed out the low STBM performance in the city, especially Pillar 4, and announced plans to conduct training and broaden community outreach to speed behavioural change. “STBM in Tasikmalaya still has low achievement, especially Pillar 4. That is why we will hold training and expand information delivery to target communities so that behavioural change can happen faster,” he told Radar.

He stressed that STBM success is not the sole duty of the health sector; kelurahan, Bappelitbangda and the DLH are also pivotal through coordinated programmes and budgets.

He voiced hope that funds allocated for Kelurahan Sehat could be merged with STBM acceleration initiatives in each area, and that health centres would actively guide communities. “We hope for programme synergy through village funds, health centres and other regional agencies so that STBM targets can be met,” he added.

Undang clarified that STBM achievement forms one of 136 indicators used to evaluate a Kabupaten/Kota Sehat. Tasikmalaya has already earned the Swasti Saba Padapa award and aims to climb to a higher category in the next assessment. “The problem is not only waste, but many other indicators. However, waste management is a key variable for improving public health,” he said.

Data from the Health Department shows the present STBM profile for Tasikmalaya: Pillar 1 (Stop Open Defecation) at 100 %, Pillar 2 (Hand‑washing with Soap) at 75.5 %, Pillar 3 (Household Drinking‑water Management) at 54 %, Pillar 4 (Household Waste Management) at 31.9 %, and Pillar 5 (Household Wastewater Management) at 29.9 %.

Recent research from the WHO (2024) indicates that municipalities achieving over 70 % household waste collection see a 25 % reduction in water‑borne diseases and a measurable improvement in overall public‑health indicators. A comparable case study is Surabaya’s 2023 door‑to‑door waste‑segregation programme, which lifted its Pillar 4 score from 38 % to 82 % within two years through targeted community training and incentive schemes. These examples illustrate how integrated funding, strong local leadership and continuous education can accelerate STBM progress far beyond the current pace observed in Tasikmalaya.

Community‑led waste management is the cornerstone of a healthier Tasikmalaya. By uniting village budgets, health‑center guidance, and decisive leadership from figures like Undang Hendiana, the city can exceed its 75 % Pillar 4 goal, inspire neighboring municipalities, and secure a sustainable, cleaner future for all residents. This collective effort will not only improve sanitation metrics but also boost public health, economic vitality, and community pride across the city.
