Thecuy.com – Mass protests against rising cost of living, military expansion, and increased arms spending spread across several Italian cities on Saturday (24/10/2026). Clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement were reported in Rome, Bologna, and Turin.

In Bologna, clashes erupted on Saturday evening local time. Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that emergency medical services received 17 calls for help, with six individuals later transported to hospital by ambulance.

Meanwhile, in Rome, an anti‑war demonstration kicked off at Piazza della Repubblica on Saturday afternoon. According to the ANSA news agency, clashes unfolded in the city centre later that night. Police deployed water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd amid heightened tensions.

In Turin, a protest primarily focused on increased military spending and fuel prices also turned violent. Several demonstrators were said to have thrown fireworks and bottles at officers, prompting a response with tear‑gas rounds.

The Italian government deployed extra police forces following violent protests and looting that took place the previous weekend, notably in Milan. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi ordered an increase in police personnel across various regions, concentrating security efforts on major cities anticipated to host the largest demonstrations.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the violence during the protest wave in a social‑media post on Saturday night. She stressed that public safety must be a priority, for both those expressing their views peacefully and for residents going about their daily lives.

“Everyone’s safety must be guaranteed—whether they are peacefully protesting, working, or simply trying to live in their city without fear,” Meloni said.

She also warned that protests should not be hijacked by those seeking to incite unrest. “We must not give any leeway to those who only crave confrontation and violence,” she added.

The wave of protests unfolded amid growing scrutiny of living costs, fuel prices, and Italy’s policy of increasing its military budget.
