Thecuy.com – An increase in ship material prices is expected to reach 20% in 2026, according to Anita Puji Utami, Chairperson of the Indonesian Shipbuilding and Offshore Industry Association (Iperindo). Speaking after the inauguration of Iperindo’s 2026‑2030 board in South Jakarta, she said this situation poses a challenge for shipyards when taking part in tenders that do not account for the price hike.

“The increase could be 20 percent. Starting in 2026, yes,” she said. Anita also stressed the need for government assistance through incentives and price regulation of raw materials to help the national shipping sector cope with rising production costs. “Since the dollar is already very high, these high raw material costs certainly impact the overall production value,” she added.

Shipbuilding Capacity and Market Demand

Iperindo noted that the current capacity of the domestic shipyard industry stands at approximately 1,200 new vessels annually, with a repair capacity of 30,000 slots. Conversely, the demand for ships used in mining has plummeted dramatically by as much as 60%. “For mining, the drop is as high as 60 percent. From last year to this year, the demand for mining vessels has fallen sharply,” she explained.

Anita said the current vessel requirements are shifting towards the transport of petroleum products (BBM), and the types of ships being built are adapting to market demand. “Nowadays, ship production is dominated by tankers and mini‑tankers, not by barges and tugboats as in the previous year,” she added.

Prioritising Domestic Shipyards

Furthermore, Iperindo urges that ship construction within the country be given priority to local shipyards. This aligns with the government’s intention to issue a Presidential Decree on domestic shipbuilding, aimed at boosting the domestic component ratio (TKDN) and reinforcing the national maritime sector.

We call on the government to provide incentives to enable the shipping industry to adjust to these fast‑changing market conditions,” Anita concluded.
