PANGANDARAN, Thecuy.com – Majestic upon its completion, yet fading after being abandoned.

Alun-Alun Pangbagea in Cintakarya Village, Parigi District, Pangandaran Regency, now stands in a state of neglect.

The public space, completed in 2021, has lost its vibrancy, with businesses failing and several facilities left non-functional.

This situation raises concerns about the sustainable management of public assets built with substantial funding.

Without regular maintenance and activities, the once-bustling square gradually loses its appeal.

Wawang Darmawan, Head of Cintakarya Village, stated that the local economic activity in the area only persisted briefly after the square’s inauguration.

Currently, the traders who once populated the area have left due to the lack of visitors and buyers.

“There are no more traders now because it’s quiet, no one is buying. I find the condition of Alun-Alun Pangbagea truly disheartening,” Wawang told reporters on Wednesday (21/10/2026).

He believes that the substantial budget allocated for the square’s construction should be accompanied by sustainable management.

However, as attention to public facilities wanes, investments intended to benefit the community risk becoming assets that lose their function.

“Previously, it wasn’t small money, but large sums. Perhaps due to the lack of management by the local government, the place has now become dilapidated,” he said.

Currently, activities at Alun-Alun Pangbagea are mostly limited to morning sports such as jogging.

Beyond that, the area has not regained its role as a gathering space capable of revitalizing social and economic activities in the community.

Several supporting facilities also require attention, particularly street lighting, which has long been non-functional.

The lights in the area are typically only activated during specific events.

Wawang cited an example where the lighting was restored when Cintakarya Village Government held the Republic of Indonesia’s Independence Day celebration last August.

This situation reveals issues that go beyond mere emptiness of the area.

Public spaces require routine maintenance, functional facilities, and regular activities to ensure their existence goes beyond being just a building that was once inaugurated.
