Pemugaran Yasti Mahastupa Candi Borobudur Ditargetkan Rampung 24 Oktober 2026, Didanai Donasi Publik

Thecuy.com, Candi Borobudur – Restoration of the Yasti Mahastupa at Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java, is slated for completion on 24 October 2026. Funding comes from Buddhist community donations and does not draw from the state revenue and expenditure budget (APBN).

Culture Minister Fadli Zon said the restoration was undertaken after cracks, cavities, and shifted stone arrangements were discovered at the temple’s summit. At a media briefing on the Borobudur Stupa restoration and the inauguration of the Prajnaparamita Gallery at the National Museum in Central Jakarta, Fadli stated, “The donors are from the Buddhist community. As I said, it’s not from the state budget; we’re opening this scheme to public participation.”

The damage to Yasti was detected through monitoring and technical assessments in 2026. Restoration aims to re‑stabilise the structure, especially as Yasti sits at the temple’s highest point and is vulnerable to earthquakes. “There are also risks from volcanic ash and other shifts that could cause damage, potentially endangering visitors nearby. After all, Yasti is positioned at the summit,” Fadli explained.

Fadli said the restoration uses only original materials already present. Each stone handled is documented and numbered so it can be returned to its original position. “Up to now, no new materials have been used and there has been no complete demolition,” he said.

Only the sections of Yasti that require intervention are being repaired, while other areas undergo conservation. Fadli stressed that this work is crucial because the Mahastupa has not been restored since Dutch architect Theodoor van Erp’s overhaul between 1907 and 1911.

During the works, regular visitors and pilgrimage participants can still reach up to the eighth level, while sunrise and sunset programme guests can access up to the ninth floor. The northern terrace, however, remains temporarily closed as it falls within the restoration work zone.

Besides the Yasti restoration, Fadli highlighted climate change as a challenge for preserving Borobudur Temple. Exposure to rain and heat, chemical pollution, and moss growth can accelerate stone decay and erode the temple’s relief details.

The government plans to discuss relief preservation efforts with specialists from various fields, including archaeology, architecture, and chemistry. One technology being trialled is a water‑repellent substance that helps prevent water from being absorbed into the stone’s pores.

Fadli also stressed the importance of educating visitors to prevent damage caused by human activity, such as touching reliefs or spilling liquids on the temple structure. “When it comes to humans, for instance vandalism, we can educate visitors. We indeed hope visitors won’t touch things or spill liquids,” he said.

On the other hand, the government intends to install a Catra at the top of Borobudur Temple as part of efforts to make the site a living heritage—an cultural legacy that continues to be used for religious activities. Fadli said the plan to install the Catra is still being discussed with UNESCO.
