The show originates from the light novel How Not to Summon a Demon Lord, penned by Yukiya Murasaki and illustrated by Takahiro Tsurusaki. It centers on Takuma Sakamoto, a reclusive NEET who devotes his time to the online game Cross Reverie. While he excels in‑game as a top player, his real‑world existence is far less remarkable.
Suddenly, Takuma awakens in a setting that mirrors Cross Reverie, but now inside the body of his in‑game persona, the Demon Lord Diablo. Puzzled, he learns that a demi‑human and an elf had summoned Diablo to be their master. However, the spell backfires.
The magical ring Diablo wears flips the enchantment, turning the summoned beings into his servants. Left stranded in the Cross Reverie universe, Diablo must navigate this new realm while carrying his unexpected companions.
