The English cheese‑rolling is an annual spring event held during the British Spring Bank Holiday at Cooper’s Hill in the village of Brockworth, close to Gloucester. It is famously called the Cooper’s Hill Cheese‑Rolling and Wake.

During the custom, a large cheese wheel is released from the hilltop and rolls down a 182‑metre slope. Competitors chase the cheese until it reaches the finish line at the bottom of the hill. The first person to cross the line wins and receives both honour and the cheese wheel.

The cheese used is a Double Gloucester weighing between 3 and 4 kilograms, which lets it speed down the slope at roughly 110 kilometres per hour. Multiple races are held in one day, with three events for men and one for women.

Elders in the Brockworth community wrap the cheese about a week before the event, and this task is seen as a great honour.

The origins of the practice remain unclear. Some think it is linked to preserving grazing rights on common land, while others see it as an ancient pagan rite of rolling cheese down a hill to pray for a fortunate harvest.

Despite the many injuries that occur each year from falls down the hill, interest never wanes. Numerous participants compete annually, and some even travel from abroad to join the race.

Danish Cinnamon‑Sprinkling Tradition

In western Denmark, a curious tradition exists whereby anyone who has not married by the time they turn 25 is detained by friends and then dusted with cinnamon.

A less common variant is the sprinkling of pepper on unmarried people when they reach 30, though the practice can pose health risks despite sounding like a joke.

Next on our global cultural customs list is Mexico’s unique birthday rite called La Mordida. During the party, the birthday child’s hands are held behind their back while they reach for the cake.

When the celebrant takes the first bite, guests cheer and unexpectedly push the cake into their face while shouting “Mordida! Mordida! Mordida!” – Spanish for ‘bite’. This custom is a hallmark of Mexican birthday parties.

The Monkey‑Buffet Festival in Thailand is a unique event held at Phra Prang Sam Yot Temple in Lopburi on the last Sunday of November. Locals prepare a special feast for the thousands of resident macaques, who are believed to bring good fortune to the area and its people, and are thus honoured as guests during the celebration.

The festivities are lively, beginning with an opening ceremony where participants dress as monkeys. There is also a tower of fruit and vegetables that the macaques can climb, jump on, and eat throughout the event.
