PANGANDARAN, Thecuy.com— Salah seorang warga Blok Warung Bungur, RT 01/RW 06, Dusun Empangsari, Desa/Kecamatan Kalipucang, Karsem (60) leads a hard life. Amid a fragile economy, she cares for her husband who suffers from a malignant tumor.

Her husband’s illness gradually depletes their possessions. The farmland that had been their source of income was forced to be sold, and two motorcycles were also relinquished to fund Mansur’s medical treatment.

In addition to her husband’s malignant tumor, her child is battling tongue cancer and requires surgery. For a year and a half, Karsem has been nursing her husband, constantly accompanying him to medical examinations at Margono Hospital in Central Java.

Financial constraints make traveling to the hospital a challenge in itself. “Traveling to Java requires renting a car to accompany my husband; the cost is about Rp600 thousand per trip,” she said recently.

She mentioned that they no longer have the funds to use a car. In fact, the car rental expenses used for treatment have left an outstanding debt of around Rp3.5 million. “There are still unpaid amounts,” she said.

Nevertheless, she remains grateful for still being healthy enough to support her husband. “Thank goodness I’m still healthy enough to accompany him,” she expressed.

Amid these circumstances, Karsem seeks whatever income she can by making gadung chips for sale. The raw material is not easy to obtain.

Karsem must venture deep into the forest to find gadung. While gathering gadung, she also collects palm fronds to make brooms.

Upon returning home, Mansur, whose condition is still limited, assists in processing the gadung. “When I make gadung chips, I search for gadung far away. While searching for sapu lidi. Later, Mr. Mansur will peel it at home,” she said.

The gadung chips are sold at around Rp60 thousand per kilogram. It’s not always high volume, but it’s enough to help meet the family’s needs. “I sell it when there are orders,” she said.
