Director Zach Cregger has stated that the Resident Evil film will be the sole major franchise adaptation he will direct. After completing the latest horror movie, Cregger is choosing to refocus on original projects that grant him greater creative freedom.
During a recent interview, the filmmaker previously known for Barbarian and Weapons explained that he has no interest in taking on another franchise project after Resident Evil.
He indicated that his primary motivation for accepting the project was not the franchise’s big name, but rather his personal affection for Capcom’s survival horror game series.
Resident Evil stands as the only exception for Zach Cregger
Cregger clarified that as a storyteller he desires the freedom to craft narratives without being bound by the numerous constraints of a large franchise. He feels more at ease developing tales that spring from his own imagination rather than tailoring them to meet studio expectations or specific franchise elements.
Nevertheless, Resident Evil is an exception since Cregger has a deep connection to the series. He admits to being a gamer and aims to produce a film adaptation that mirrors the horror experience he enjoyed while playing the games.
The newest Resident Evil film also departs from earlier adaptations. Instead of directly adapting the stories of iconic characters like Leon Kennedy or Jill Valentine, it introduces a fresh narrative featuring an original protagonist named Bryan who becomes entangled in a plague outbreak in Raccoon City.
Cregger’s choice to step back from franchise projects makes Resident Evil a particularly special film in his career. For the director, this endeavor is not merely about leveraging a big name, but an opportunity to create a movie that both pays homage to its source material and retains its own distinct identity.
