Sequel Resident Evil now appears on director Zach Cregger’s radar after his reboot film achieved massive box office success. Cregger originally intended Resident Evil (2026) to be a standalone story.
The latest Resident Evil movie debuted domestically earning roughly US$60 million, marking the best opening in the franchise’s history. Worldwide, the film grossed US$108.3 million in its opening week.
Zach Cregger Already Has Ideas for a Resident Evil Sequel
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Cregger said he actually felt satisfied after completing the first film.
He believes Resident Evil was originally designed as a one‑time film. However, new ideas keep emerging, so he’s not ruling out returning to that world.
“The film was intended as a standalone story, so that goal has been met. But I can’t help myself. There are always new ideas cropping up, and I’ve got some thoughts about what could happen next. So who knows, anything could happen,” Cregger said.
That statement cannot yet be taken as an indirect confirmation that a Resident Evil sequel will be made. Still, Cregger hasn’t closed the door to returning to the survival‑horror world he just built.
One thing that sets the newest Resident Evil film apart from earlier adaptations is Cregger’s decision not to directly adapt a specific game’s story.
Instead of centering the story on iconic characters like Leon S. Kennedy, Jill Valentine, or Chris Redfield, the film introduces a new character named Bryan, played by Austin Abrams.
Bryan is a courier who must survive as the T‑Virus outbreak transforms Raccoon City into a monster‑filled, chaotic place. This approach gives Cregger more freedom to craft fresh stories without being bound by the familiar game narrative.
Interestingly, the film also keeps the core elements that define Resident Evil, especially the survival‑horror atmosphere, exploration, monsters, and high‑tension situations.
Thus, if a Resident Evil sequel does happen, Cregger has a spacious new world to develop.
Box Office Success Paves a Wider Path
Resident Evil’s commercial success is another reason why the chance of a second film feels increasingly open.
The film earned US$60 million at the domestic box office in its first week, far surpassing the previous debut record held by Resident Evil: Afterlife at about US$26.5 million.
Worldwide, it posted a debut of US$108.3 million, making it the biggest opening in Resident Evil film history and Cregger’s largest debut to date.
In terms of critical reception, the film also received positive responses. Resident Evil holds a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, one of the highest achievements of Cregger’s career.
Those numbers make the continuation of the reboot increasingly compelling to await.
Even though various indicators point to the possibility of a follow‑up film, Sony Pictures has not officially announced that a Resident Evil sequel has been green‑lit.
Cregger himself is still being fairly open‑mouthed. He says he already has some ideas, but has not said he has signed on for a second film.
That means fans will need to wait for an official decision from Sony and Cregger for now.
Clearly, Resident Evil (2026) has provided a new foundation for the franchise. If box office success continues, it is not impossible that Bryan’s adventure and Cregger’s Raccoon City world will get a next chapter.
