The future of the The Matrix franchise is once again making headlines after co‑creator Lilly Wachowski said she has little interest in returning to the world she and her sister Lana Wachowski built.
In a recent interview, Lilly said she’s done with the franchise. She explained that even though Warner Bros. still wants to continue the series, she no longer wants to be involved in that creative world.
Matrix 5 Faces a Complex Creative Situation
Lilly’s comments came as the The Matrix 5 project is in development. This fifth installment will be the first in the franchise not directed by either Lilly or Lana Wachowski. Director Drew Goddard has been tapped to write and helm the film.
However, the project’s progress has not been straightforward. Lilly said that Goddard is unwilling to proceed without the approval or “blessing” of the Wachowski family.
This puts the position of Matrix 5 in a more complicated spot because Lilly is still unsure if she wants to give the project her full support. Although she says she doesn’t want to get actively involved again, Lilly is open to looking at the ideas Goddard presents and considering a small role if it aligns with the franchise’s vision.
Warner Bros. originally announced development of The Matrix 5 in 2024. To this day, official plot details, cast, and production schedules have not been disclosed. Lana Wachowski is known to still be involved as an executive producer.
Given this situation, the future of The Matrix 5 remains a big question mark. Fans are now waiting to see if the new film will be a continuation that honors the legacy of the classic series or takes the franchise in an entirely different direction.
