New director of The Batman Part II, Steven Soderbergh assists Matt Reeves in finishing filming

Steven Soderbergh takes on the role as the new director for The Batman Part II, but he does not replace Matt Reeves.

The Batman Part II film sees a shift in its production process. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Steven Soderbergh, director of Ocean’s Eleven, Magic Mike, and Traffic, will help finish the main filming of the DC movie, stepping in for Matt Reeves who temporarily cannot be on set due to family matters.

Nevertheless, this change does not mean Matt Reeves is stepping down from the project. Reeves remains the main director of The Batman Part II and will work remotely to oversee production until the main filming is completed.

This news has attracted attention because Reeves has led the development of the The Batman franchise since being appointed as director in 2017. The film starring Robert Pattinson is scheduled for theatrical release on February 18, 2028.

Steven Soderbergh was said to have offered direct assistance to Matt Reeves to ensure that the production process of The Batman Part II stays on track.

In the plan prepared, Soderbergh will work in London to help with filming, while Reeves will continue to monitor the process from Los Angeles. Reeves is expected to become more intensively involved when the film enters post-production in Los Angeles.

Production of The Batman Part II is said to have reached about two-thirds of the entire process. Soderbergh’s presence is expected to help complete the remaining filming without altering the creative direction already established by Reeves.

Soderbergh also emphasized that his task is to ensure that new material blends in with the footage already captured.

He admitted to greatly admiring Reeves’ approach to making The Batman, especially in terms of vision, detail, and story consistency. Therefore, Soderbergh wants to work with Reeves’ team so that the additional footage remains consistent with the overall film.

After news of Soderbergh’s involvement surfaced, Matt Reeves provided clarification through his X account. He emphasized that he is not leaving the The Batman Part II project.

Reeves also expressed gratitude to Soderbergh for being willing to help him during the family situation he is facing.

That statement also confirms that Reeves’ position as the main director remains intact. He will continue to oversee the film remotely throughout the filming process.

Warner Bros. and DC are also reported to be giving full support to Reeves. In addition to working on The Batman, he also serves as a producer in other DC projects and is a key figure behind the The Penguin series.

With that support, Soderbergh’s involvement is aimed at helping the production run smoothly rather than taking over the creative control of the film.
