Mungkin sebagian dari Anda masih bertanya‑tanya apakah Godzilla itu baik atau jahat. Sebenarnya, Godzilla bisa dianggap sebagai karakter yang berada di area abu‑abu.
Is Godzilla, who frequently ravages cities, a hero or a villain?
It’s undeniable that when we discuss giant monsters or kaiju, Godzilla instantly comes to mind. This massive creature often devastates cities and battles other monsters within them, prompting the question of whether Godzilla is inherently evil.
Is Godzilla Good or Evil?
1. A natural creature from nature, but on a giant scale

When we discuss “good versus evil”, it’s difficult to immediately label Godzilla as either good or bad.
In essence, Godzilla is an entity that acts on instinct, much like any other animal. However, due to his massive size, his instinctive actions inevitably impact humans.
For example, the 1954 Godzilla was initially portrayed as a wounded prehistoric beast who lost his family and whose habitat was destroyed by the American use of a hydrogen bomb. As a result, ShinGoji (another name for the 1954 Godzilla) grew enraged and ravaged a city.
Usually, this version of Godzilla simply reflects a creature following its natural instincts, similar to wild animals. The only difference is their enormous size, which makes the resulting damage extremely destructive.
The most vivid example is the Heisei era Godzilla. Although he merely attempts to survive like any other animal, his colossal size and the presence of other monster threats keep him in constant conflict.
2. The Showa Era: Godzilla the Hero

During the Showa period, Godzilla was crafted with lighter elements and a typical tokusatsu atmosphere of that time, featuring heroic storylines.
In that era, Godzilla served as a protector of Earth and humanity, defending them from other threatening monsters.
3. Godzilla’s instinct to preserve balance, despite the destruction caused

Aside from the Showa variant, it is hard to view Godzilla as a pure hero for humanity. This is because he is a giant monster, and each of his actions inevitably affects ordinary human life.
However, there is also a version of Godzilla that possesses a natural instinct to maintain equilibrium, which indirectly safeguards humanity, as seen in the Legendary or Monsterverse iterations.
Yet, the consequences of this process (such as confronting a monster that disrupts balance) are directly felt by humans.
4. GMKGoji: the variant we could label as the most ruthless!

Previous statements always suggest that Godzilla exists in a grey area when we wonder if he is good or evil. However, there is one version where he is outright villainous!
In 2001, the film Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack was released, featuring the highly antagonistic character GMKGoji!
This Godzilla is not an ordinary monster like the other versions; he is a spiritual entity composed of the souls of Japanese people who died as a result of World War II.
The deceased souls seek revenge against Japan for the nation’s neglect of its history.
This Godzilla-like creature has a mission to destroy Japan! You can see his appearance in the image above, which is indeed quite terrifying.

Thus, that is the explanation—whether Godzilla is good or evil depends entirely on the version! What are your thoughts?
