In a historic first for the Godzilla franchise, TOHO’s Godzilla Minus Zero receives an R rating from the MPA.
Godzilla Minus Zero looks set to be one of the most brutal Godzilla movies ever made. For the first time in franchise history, the film has earned a strong R rating from the Motion Picture Association (MPA).
The sequel to Godzilla Minus One is being developed again by Takashi Yamazaki and is rumored to feature a much greater threat with the appearance of King Ghidorah.
Godzilla Minus Zero Becomes First Godzilla Film to Receive an R Rating
According to various reports, the R rating was assigned due to the film containing intense and bloody violence (strong/bloody violence).
This rating marks a new milestone for the Godzilla franchise. In comparison, Godzilla Minus One received a PG-13 rating in the United States. Other Godzilla films, both those produced by Toho and the MonsterVerse series from Legendary, have remained below this classification.
The decision to assign an R rating suggests that Godzilla Minus Zero will deliver a more intense level of violence than previous installments.
This makes sense considering the film not only features Godzilla but is also rumored to include King Ghidorah as one of the primary threats.
The battle between the two giant kaiju could bring about destruction on a larger scale while making the film feel considerably darker.
Continuing the Success of Godzilla Minus One
Godzilla Minus Zero has the challenging task of following in the footsteps of its predecessor.
Godzilla Minus One became a global phenomenon after its release in 2023. The film grossed over US$110 million worldwide at the box office and won more than 50 awards throughout award seasons.
The film’s greatest achievement came at the Academy Awards when Godzilla Minus One won Best Visual Effects. That victory stands as one of the most historic triumphs in the long-standing Godzilla franchise.
The film also became the 30th Godzilla movie produced in Japan.
The success of Minus One prompted Toho to quickly develop its sequel. Takashi Yamazaki was once again entrusted to write and direct the project.
Now, Godzilla Minus Zero carries much higher expectations. Especially since Minus One is often regarded as one of the best Godzilla films since the original 1954 movie.
Release Schedule
Godzilla Minus Zero will premiere in Japan first on 3 November 2026. It will then be released internationally starting 5 and 6 November 2026, depending on the region.
For Indonesian audiences in particular, the film is scheduled to arrive earlier on 4 November 2026.
The film will also be shown in IMAX format, allowing the battle between Godzilla and King Ghidorah to be experienced on a larger screen and with enhanced sound.
With an R rating that marks a new milestone for the franchise, the return of Takashi Yamazaki, and the appearance of King Ghidorah, Godzilla Minus Zero looks set to take the Godzilla story in a much darker and more brutal direction.
