GARUT, Thecuy.com – On Saturday, September 5, 2026, around 7:00 PM WIB, a land fire broke out at the foot of Mount Cikuray in Mekarjaya Village, Cikajang District, Garut Regency.

The blaze is believed to have affected about five hectares of land belonging to Perhutani CDK 5.

Cikajang Police Chief AKP Patri Arsono, together with his officers, promptly inspected the area and coordinated with KRPH Perhutani Cikajang to assess accessible routes leading to the fire site.

PGRI Kota Banjar warned teachers not to fall for illegal loans and online gambling, and urged the Pamegatan‑Singajaya road in Garut to be upgraded to provincial status.

The Cikajang Police Chief, together with Forkopimcam officials, forestry service staff, Perhutani representatives, and other relevant parties, proceeded to the scene.

However, rough terrain, poor lighting, and safety concerns prevented the team from reaching the fire site immediately.

The team then set up monitoring from the base of Mount Cikuray.

According to Perhutani, traveling from the monitoring point to the fire site still takes about two hours through challenging and risky terrain.

Considering safety, the officers decided not to continue the journey and instead maintained monitoring from a safer location.

Around 10:00 PM WIB, the fire was contained by establishing a firebreak—creating a soil barrier around the fire’s perimeter to prevent further spread.

“According to field officers, the dry shrub vegetation caused by the dry season could cause the fire to spread quickly,” he said on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

Even though the fire has been contained, the Cikajang Police Chief and Forkopimcam officials continue to monitor the area.

The Garut New Market area will be renovated, with traders relocated temporarily, while non‑functional street lighting on the RTA Prawira Adiningrat route in Tasikmalaya is considered accident‑prone.

He stated that fire suppression efforts prioritized coordination and officer safety, given the difficult terrain and nighttime conditions at the fire site.

“Due to the challenging terrain and safety concerns, monitoring was carried out from a safe location while forestry officers and Perhutani worked to contain the fire,” he said.

The police chief added that, during the final check, no fire spots were visible from afar and the situation in Cikajang District remained calm.

“The cause of the fire is still unknown and is under investigation,” he added.

His office urged the public to heighten vigilance against forest and land fire risks, especially during the dry season.
