Thecuy.com – The up‑and‑coming Philippine tennis star, Alex Eala, advanced to the second round of the 2026 US Open after a dominant win over Mary Stoiana, 6‑1, 6‑2, at Flushing Meadows, New York. She will now face Oleksandra Oliynykova, a Ukrainian player who also posted a solid first‑round victory.
This triumph reinforces Eala’s rise as a promising youngster on the women’s tennis circuit. She has drawn attention not only for her on‑court results but also for the enthusiastic backing of the Filipino community, highlighted by fan‑made posters displayed around New York.
The 21‑year‑old has made history as the first Filipina to capture a WTA singles title this season. Victories at events like the D.C. Open and strong showings at other Grand Slams illustrate her rapid progression in the sport.
Yet, amid the support, Eala has encountered criticism over alleged preferential treatment during the competition. She remains focused on self‑improvement and aims to serve as a role model for younger athletes. In her post‑match press conference, she emphasized her dedication to continuous growth both on and off the court.
In the second round, Eala will renew her rivalry with Oleksandra Oliynykova, whom she previously defeated at Strasbourg in May 2026. The clash is expected to be intense, as both players know each other’s style and are determined to advance further in the US Open.
Support from the Filipino community continues to pour in, with fans turning out carrying flags and banners bearing the slogan “Laban Alex” (“Fight on, Alex”). This reflects the high hopes and national pride surrounding Eala’s tennis career.
Alex Eala is more than a successful tennis player; she embodies inspiration and national pride. Her run at the 2026 US Open remains in the spotlight and is hoped to inspire countless young Filipinos to excel in sports.
