TASIKMALAYA, Thecuy.com – Sometimes a gathering happens without any prior planning. No agenda, no formal protocol, and certainly no need for excessive coffee.

Yesterday I ran into H Yanto Oce at Hokka Habibi on Kuningan Street, a well‑known meeting spot for people of Arab descent where folks come together, chat, dine, and leave with their own stories.

Yanto arrived wearing a Solo‑style batik. What caught my eye wasn’t the batik, but his beard.

Now Yanto’s beard has turned white, making him look much older than he did a few years ago. Yet one thing remains unchanged: his walking pace stays slow and relaxed.

There’s no sense of rush; it’s as if life doesn’t need to be hurried. After all, they say that being too fast can mean you miss the chance to enjoy the journey.

Yanto Oce’s name isn’t unfamiliar to Tasikmalaya residents. Even though he isn’t often seen in the city, his name still resonates. Whenever a political cycle rolls around, YO’s name— as some locals call him— almost always surfaces.

Sometimes it comes up in political discussions, other times in legal talks, or economic debates, and occasionally in social contexts. And sometimes it just pops up because people are talking about Tasikmalaya.

That’s Yanto Oce, a figure who doesn’t fit neatly into a single category. He was born in Tasikmalaya, and his family home is in Cibeureum. There’s even a nearby alley named Gang H Oce, named after his biological father.

It was there that Yanto grew up, becoming a typical Tasik resident: making friends, playing with neighbors, and building relationships.

Through those friendships his network expanded, reaching even to Jakarta. Perhaps that’s why, even when he’s not physically present in Tasik, his name still lingers there. Relationships truly are strange.

One can travel far, yet one’s circle of friends doesn’t move with them. Yesterday we had a casual chat. Yanto still seems to enjoy his work as a curator and advocate.

Yanto’s name also briefly captured Tasikmalaya’s public attention when he was appointed as the legal counsel for former Education Minister Nadiem Makarim.
