Thecuy.com – The Indonesian National Air Force (TNI AU) serves as the air component of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, tasked with defending the nation’s airspace. Its origins trace back to the People’s Security Agency, evolving into the People’s Security Aviation Department on 5 October 1945, led by Air Commodore Soerjadi Soerjadarma. By Government Decree No. 6/SD on 9 April 1946, the department was elevated to the Indonesian Republic Air Force, positioned equally with the army and navy, with Soerjadi Soerjadarma as its inaugural Chief of Staff. This date is celebrated today as the TNI AU’s birthday, marking its 80th anniversary in 2026. Its motto, Swa Bhuwana Paksa, derived from Sanskrit, translates to “Protective Wings of My Homeland.” The TNI AU’s headquarters resides in Jakarta, overseen by the Chief of Air Staff (KSAU), presently held by Marshal TNI Mohamad Tonny Harjono.
Since 5 April 2024, pursuant to Article 10 of the TNI Law, the TNI Air Force is charged with conducting air defence operations, upholding laws, and maintaining security within the nation’s air jurisdiction in compliance with domestic statutes and ratified international agreements, as well as constructing and enhancing its air power. Its operational area stretches from Sabang to Merauke and is divided into three regional commands, supported by dozens of air bases (Lanud) scattered across the archipelago. Beyond its flying units, the TNI AU fields a special forces unit called the Quick Reaction Forces Corps (Korpasgat), popularly known as the “Orange Beret”. To sustain its personnel needs, the TNI AU conducts annual recruitments for officers, sergeants and enlisted men through the Perwira, Bintara, and Tamtama channels each year.
