Chainsmoker Cat, a dark comedy anime that shows the gritty daily struggles of cat‑girl characters, many of whom grapple with nicotine and drug addiction, has been removed from the Hong Kong version of Animation Crazy. Animation Crazy operates as an official streaming site run by the Taiwanese online community Bahamut.

The removal only affects Hong Kong, while the series stays on the service in Taiwan (as illustrated above). The Hong Kong page of Animation Crazy reported receiving a notice from the city’s Health Department accusing the anime of breaching Sections 13B and 14 of the Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance—specifically “the online distribution of ‘advertisements for tobacco products’.” Animation Crazy issued an apology and urged affected users to pursue refunds via the available channels if they feel their rights were infringed.
Under the law, a breach of Section 13B can result in a top penalty of HK$50,000 (≈US$6,400) and, if the violation continues, an additional HK$1,500 (≈US$191) for every day the offence persists.
Chainsmoker Cat features vivid scenes of substance abuse—smoking several cigarettes in a single session, withdrawal episodes, and relentless chain‑smoking. Though presented comically, the series is generally viewed as a stark, unglamorous portrayal of nicotine addiction and related behavioural issues.
The show can still be streamed on Netflix, but the Ani-One Asia YouTube channel has removed it from Hong Kong. Ani‑One Asia’s July post listed Hong Kong as one of its licensed markets, yet the series is now inaccessible there. Adults in Hong Kong are allowed to buy and smoke tobacco.

In Japan, the series is thought to have been discussed at a recent meeting of the BPO (Broadcasting Ethics & Program Improvement Organization). Panelists criticized its portrayals of smoking and drug use, yet the BPO official overseeing the case concluded the content is protected under freedom of expression. (Mynavi News)
