Thecuy.com – The process for selecting the Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Central Board (PBNU) using the Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi (AHWA) system is considered more aligned with NU traditions and organisational values compared to a direct election. This perspective comes from the Deputy Katib Syuriyah of the DKI Jakarta NU Regional Board, KH Taufik Damas, who underscores the need to keep the election process grounded in consultation and the wisdom of the ulama.

KH Taufik asserts that the PBNU Chairman should be chosen based on criteria of knowledge, moral character, exemplary conduct, and community welfare, rather than mere popularity or the highest vote count in an electoral contest.

Potensi Polarisasi dari Pemilihan Langsung

According to KH Taufik, a direct election mechanism has the potential to create a culture of electoral competition that could spark polarisation among NU members. Campaign activities and the formation of support groups could jeopardise the unity and brotherhood that have long defined NU. Therefore, he cautions that the selection of leaders must not cause NU members to split into opposing factions.

Posisi Kiai dan Amanah Kepemimpinan

KH Taufik also emphasises that the position of kiai within NU tradition does not arise from an open electoral process, but rather from a long journey of scholarship, dedication, and exemplary service in society. The AHWA mechanism is regarded as capable of preserving the dignity of ulama leadership by prioritising trust and service, rather than mere competition for votes.

AHWA sebagai Wujud Tradisi Syura NU

In NU’s tradition, AHWA is a mechanism that ensures the election process remains within a framework of consultation and ulama wisdom. Nonetheless, this mechanism does not suppress the aspirations of NU members, who can still be represented through the muktamar forum. These aspirations are then considered by ulama possessing both scholarly and moral capacity to determine the most suitable leadership.

KH Taufik stresses that preserving AHWA does not mean rejecting democratic principles, but rather ensuring that the democracy applied remains rooted in NU’s values and traditions.

NU possesses a distinctive leadership structure, with Rais Aam serving as the religious authority and the Chairman of Tanfidziyah as the organisational executor. This balance must be maintained through propriety, scholarly hierarchy, and consultation so that both can complement each other in managing the organisation.

Menjaga Jati Diri NU Melalui Mekanisme AHWA

KH Taufik affirms that upholding the AHWA mechanism is an effort to preserve NU’s identity, ensuring that leadership is not merely about electoral mandate, but about a trust that prioritises knowledge and morality. Thus, selecting leaders through syura and ulama consideration aligns more closely with NU’s spirit and tradition.
