CIAMIS, RADARTASIK. ID— The GIAT Women’s Farmer Group in Sukajadi Village, Sadananya District, Ciamis Regency, transforms their aquaponic harvest into marketable food products. Spinach is turned into crispy chips, and catfish are crafted into savory catfish dumplings.

This innovation is part of a Community Service initiative funded by the Directorate of Research and Community Service under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, using the Community Partnership Empowerment scheme.

The activities were carried out by a team of lecturers from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), led by Ika Fitri Apriani, together with Rangga Gelar Guntara, Nugraha Adhi Pratama, and Farhan Ilham Wira Rohmat.

The program aims to help the Women’s Farmer Group make use of home gardens via aquaponics while enhancing members’ skills in turning harvest into food items with market potential.

Aquaponics is introduced as a cultivation alternative to address limited land, family food needs, and the demand for animal protein and vegetables. With a single system, communities can farm fish and grow vegetables, keeping even small plots productive.

The program does more than teach fish rearing and vegetable planting; the UPI team also encourages group members to add value to aquaponic produce by turning it into enhanced products.

Spinach, once used solely as a household vegetable, is now being processed into crispy spinach chips. In practice, the women’s group members take full part, from preparing ingredients and mixing the batter to frying, draining, and packaging the final product.

The training is conducted in a simple, participatory manner. Participants jointly practice production steps while discussing taste, texture, shape, and packaging possibilities.

In addition to spinach, the catfish harvested from aquaponics are being developed into catfish dumplings. This product offers an alternative way to process catfish beyond simply selling or eating it as a home dish.

Such processing is considered to extend the value chain of aquaculture output. Catfish, previously sold fresh, can now be transformed into ready‑to‑cook or ready‑to‑eat food items. Meanwhile, spinach with a relatively short shelf life can be turned into a snack with a longer storage period.

Through this product development, aquaponics is no longer limited to producing fish and vegetables; it also serves to boost the economic value of harvests and reinforce household food security. (rls)
