One of the most common characteristics of a people pleaser is the habit of pretending to agree with someone’s argument or opinion. While listening to the other person’s opinion is a good communication skill, it’s not the same as always agreeing with them.

Differences of opinion are normal in any argument. If you pretend to agree just to avoid further conflict with that person or because you’re afraid of being disliked due to having a different opinion, then this is already a people pleaser behavior. 

2. Merasa Wajib Menanggung Emosi Orang Lain

For someone who is sensitive and has a high level of empathy, you might easily feel other people’s mood changes. However, if you feel responsible when that person feels upset, then this is already a characteristic of a people pleaser.

3. Terus-Menerus Mengucapkan Permintaan Maaf

One of the root causes of someone becoming a people pleaser is low self-confidence and fear of being abandoned by others. This unconsciously makes you tend to easily say the word ‘sorry’.

Admitting mistakes is a good thing. However, if you too often blame yourself for everything that happens, then this is already a characteristic of a people pleaser.

4. Susah Mengucapkan Kata ‘Tidak’

If you often feel difficulty in refusing, this is also a characteristic of a people pleaser. This is not a sign that you don’t reject challenges, but you just follow other people’s flow because you lack the courage to refuse.

You don’t need to always say ‘yes’ if you think it will burden you later. Agreeing to something only when you’re sure you can do it can make it easier for you to direct your own life.

5. Menginginkan Pengakuan dan Pujian

When someone lacks sufficient self-confidence, they often seek validation from others. This is indicated as one of the characteristics of a people pleaser.

6. Berbaur dengan Berpura-pura Menjadi Seperti Orang-orang Sekitarnya

It’s not uncommon for us to adjust our personality in various different situations. Like how we differentiate our behavior when we’re in a meeting and when we’re hanging out with friends.

However, if that change forces you to pretend to the point that it feels like self-sabotage, then this has already become one of the characteristics of a people pleaser.

Some of the characteristics above can be your reference for recognizing people with people pleaser tendencies. Although avoiding conflict is a good thing, you need to be careful because if you’re too busy thinking about others, you yourself could experience burnout and stress.
