Ribbon no Kishi, also called Princess Knight, is a comic created by the renowned maestro Osamu Tezuka in 1953. The story follows Sapphire, a princess from the kingdom of Silverland who is disguised as a prince by her parents to inherit the throne and shield the realm from an evil prince seeking power. This series is widely regarded as a pioneering work that launched the trend of Japanese comics featuring strong female protagonists.

In The Ribbon Hero anime, Sapphire loses her kingdom to a natural disaster known as Nergal. She now begins a new life in the land of Goldland and is determined to safeguard her new home from the same peril that destroyed her former realm.
