The anime adaptation of Tsumuji Yoshimura’s Just Like Mona Lisa (Seibetsu “Mona Lisa” no Kimi e) has dropped its opening trailer, alongside key personnel and voice talent. It remains confirmed that animation production will be overseen by SHAFT.
Initially revealed by CyberAgent using the label “Project M,” the series will bring Yoshimura’s celebrated romance drama to the screen via the studio behind Puella Magi Madoka Magica, the Monogatari franchise, and March Comes in Like a Lion. The project also aligns with SHAFT’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

The long‑awaited TV anime of Tsumuji Yoshimura’s Just Like Mona Lisa—an work that has sold over a million copies in total—is at last arriving.
Hinase, the protagonist who remains genderless.
Childhood friends Ritsu and Shiori, both of whom have already made a choice about their gender.
What is love? What does it feel like to hold something you want to cherish above everything else?
Their classmates and the adults around them grapple and hesitate together, weaving the narrative forward.

Chika Anzai has been selected for the role of Hinase Arima. When asked about taking on the part, she commented:
I’ll always remember how this story struck me the moment I read it for the audition. It made me reflect not just on Hinase’s journey, but also on my own identity and what it means to be human. Because it stayed with me, I feel both honored to portray Hinase and deeply responsible.
She also shared insights on the recording process:
Every role is incredibly demanding, and the subjects are intricate, so we’re taking each recording session slowly and thoughtfully, working hand‑in‑hand with Director Shundo, the crew, and the cast. The original author, Jun Yoshimura, attends every session, which is very comforting for us. As a fan, I’m thrilled to see this story come to life through SHAFT’s animation. Even though the topics are weighty, there are also tender, humorous, and romantic moments, so I hope the audience won’t feel daunted.

The source manga has sold more than one million copies and was released by Square Enix via Gangan Comics ONLINE. The full series comprises eight primary volumes plus the companion releases X and Y.
The series debuted early at AnimagiC 2026, held in Mannheim, Germany. During a special stage on August 1, attendees witnessed the global launch of the anime’s opening trailer, the announcement of the principal voice actors, and a live sketching session led by Yoshimura. SHAFT’s chief executive officer, Mitsutoshi Kubota, and CyberAgent’s anime producer, Manami Kabashima, were also present.
