In a recent interview with us at Anime Corner, Masakazu Morita, the Japanese voice actor of BLEACH protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki, described his first encounter with the series and how he nearly missed out on becoming Ichigo’s voice actor.
Morita-san said he first came across BLEACH in Shonen Jump. The manga ran in the publication Weekly Shōnen Jump from August 2001 to August 2016. He added that the series “sticks with you” and was among the first works he saw that showcased shinigami/Soul Reapers.
Then, concluding his remarks, Morita-san recounted a short anecdote about his near‑missed audition. He explained, “By the way, I was actually late to the audition. It wasn’t my fault—my manager and the company gave me the wrong date. I might have missed it.”
Morita-san has been Ichigo’s voice since BLEACH was adapted by Pierrot into an anime that started airing in October 2004. Although both his Japanese and English voice actors note that the “texture” of Ichigo’s voice has evolved, the performers have stayed consistent across every BLEACH anime and game.
When the original BLEACH anime concluded in March 2012, Morita-san returned as Ichigo for the TV series continuation, BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War, which launched in October 2022. The fourth cour of BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War aired yesterday.
The series can be streamed on Hulu and Disney+ and the manga is available on VIZ.
