TASIKMALAYA, Thecuy.com – Difficulty in absorbing local labor prompted the Tasikmalaya City Government to seek alternative paths.

Eight residents were sent to participate in a scholarship training and job placement program in Japan, a swift measure to curb open unemployment rates.

The program was launched directly by Tasikmalaya Mayor Viman Alfarizi Ramadhan at the PPIK Building on Friday (24/7/2026).

In his view, sending workers abroad is a realistic solution amid limited job growth in Tasikmalaya.

“This is the fastest solution to reduce open unemployment rates in Tasikmalaya City,” Viman told reporters.

He stated that the eight participants constitute the first batch or pilot project, part of a target of approximately 52 to 55 participants to be sent in phases.

Before working in Japan, participants must undergo Japanese language training and skills enhancement for six to ten months.

After obtaining a competency and language certificate, they will be assigned jobs in Japan.

Viman stated that the participants will collaborate with retail company Dekoku Ten in Okayama City, which operates around 250 supermarkets.

The City Government guarantees that the placement process follows official channels, ensuring workers’ rights remain protected.

“They will earn a salary of approximately Rp20 million to Rp29 million per month. We guarantee that the job is clear and legal,” he said.

He is optimistic that remittances from workers can help stimulate Tasikmalaya’s economy.

In his opinion, if each worker regularly sends Rp5 million to Rp10 million monthly to their families in their hometowns, it will create a flow of money that impacts the community’s economy.

Yet, behind this optimism, Viman admitted that the job market in Tasikmalaya City is still unable to absorb a large number of workers.

Industrial growth is considered insufficient to keep pace with the number of job seekers each year.

“Not all companies suddenly need dozens of workers. Even today, there are still companies carrying out layoffs,” he revealed.

This statement signals that the government’s biggest challenge is not only sending workers abroad, but also accelerating the emergence of new investments and industries within the region.
