Bandai Namco Filmworks has officially unveiled Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, a brand‑new television series helmed by director Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim) under the newly launched RG Project. The initiative was first hinted at earlier this month.
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is set to debut in 2027 as the inaugural entry in a fresh, interlinking Gundam saga that will stretch across animated series, video games, and additional content. The animation will be overseen by SOLA ANIMATION.
The reveal occurred at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where Bandai Namco Filmworks presented the RG Project as a next‑generation multimedia undertaking centered on an original world crafted by Kamiyama, co‑developed with sci‑fi author Toh EnJoe. This endeavor links Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO to the forthcoming action title GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, both set in a shared chronology that unfolds parallel stories. The series is positioned about a century before the game’s timeline.

The story is described:

By A.A. 45, lunar and orbital colony newborns have never experienced a world without the Apocalypse.

Ray Azumi, the protagonist, is voiced by Takeo Otsuka. Described as a wartime orphan who lost his family in an Apocalypse strike, he is chosen as the pilot of Gundam ZERO. Otsuka commented on his involvement:

Director Kenji Kamiyama also discussed forging an entirely original Gundam timeline:
When I was asked to create a Gundam set in a timeline untouched by the Universal Century or the Common Era, I wrestled with many puzzles: What would replace the Earth Federation and Zeon’s Principality? How would the Newtype idea evolve? What becomes of Minovsky particles? Where would war exist in this world?
The deeper I examined what makes Gundam truly Gundam, the more I lost the spark that should fuel the project. I paused, reminded myself I could forge a new Gundam from scratch in a series I adore. Nothing beats that thrill. When I reclaimed that excitement, Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO emerged unexpectedly.

The debut of the original Mobile Suit Gundam series in 1979 eventually turned the property into one of Japan’s most impactful entertainment brands. Over the decades Gundam has branched into TV shows, movies, OVAs, comics, novels, model kits, and video games across many eras. Whereas past offshoots existed as separate universes, the RG Project creates a shared world where the anime and GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT run parallel tales in one continuous timeline. The title was first unveiled at Summer Game Fest 2026.
